Audit may cost student loan group millions. An organization that has provided student loans to New Mexicans since 1981 could owe the federal government more than $18 million. The New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation overcollected federal money on bonds used to pay for student loans over the last 12 years, according to an audit by the U.S. Department of Education.
